Loans For Home Insulation Offered To Scottish Homeowners

Mon, 05 Oct 2009

Homeowners in Scotland are to be offered loans for insulation as part of a new energy-saving pilot scheme by the Scottish Government.

Finance Secretary John Swinney said the loans would help homeowners pay their energy bills and become cut their household emissions .

Mr Swinney said energy efficiency was a key part of the government's economic recovery plan and its "climate change ambitions".

He commented: "We all need to stop wasting energy in our homes, in transport and at work. Advice on how to take simple steps to be more energy efficient - and a loan to make it more manageable - will help thousands of people cut their fuel bills and play their part in reducing emissions ."

However, the new scheme has failed to impress Scottish Labour who claim the previous administration provided insulation and new central heating systems for 100,000 homes across Scotland .

Finance spokesman Andy Kerr said: "A pilot scheme to provide loans is cold comfort to many and not an adequate response."

"The sad truth is that the SNP are letting down Scotland's pensioners and we need to see much more urgent action from ministers to ensure that our elderly people are living in warm, energy-efficient homes ."

Green MSP Patrick Harvie added that the scheme was a "pale imitation" of the one his party had proposed and accused ministers of doing the "bare minimum".
