Anyone applying for a credit card, personal loan or other forming of lending should make sure they are on the electoral register.
Neil Munroe, external affairs director at Equifax explained that this would allow lenders to check the identity and address of an individual when their personal loan application was received.
He said: "Lenders, when they're checking people out, don't just make a credit decision - they want to check that it is the right person, because of the increase in instances of identify theft and fraud."
Mr Munroe also said that getting on the electoral register was now a lot easier as people could do it "pretty much straight away" rather than waiting for the annual canvas as used to be the case.
Figures released by the Department for Constitutional Affairs in 2006 revealed that London has the worst registration rate of any region in England and Wales.
