Gross lending on loans has been "weak" in August, according to new statistics.
The total lending for overdrafts and loans rose by £0.2 billion in August, the British Bankers' Association figures show.
This compares with a £0.4 billion rise in total lending for loans and overdrafts in July and a £0.3 billion six-month average.
Furthermore, total lending for credit cards fell by £0.4 billion, a larger drop than the £0.1 recorded in July and £0.1 billion over the previous few months.
In total, new lending on credit cards was £7.2 billion, which is 11 per cent lower than the dame month in 2005.
New lending on personal loans and overdrafts was lower than the six-month average of £332 million, at £186 million.
David Dooks, British Bankers' Association's director of statistics, said: "The on-going weak appetite for consumer credit, driven by a further reduction in credit card lending, continued in August."
Recent research from Morgan Stanley Credit Card showed that there are more credit cards than adults in the UK.
